Hastings Athletic Clubs athletes returned with an impressive haul of three golds eight silvers and one bronze medal from this years Sussex Schools Championships held at Crawley’s K2 arena last weekend. Multi-talented Peter Henworth won a close contest in the senior boys pole vault clearing 4.10m just winning on count-back. He was also in the medals, winning silver in the 400m, just being pipped at the post after an impressive run of 51.3. Also in impressive form in this age category was Adam Clarke winning the 1500m in 3.56.6, a brilliant run, close to his personal best and beating second place by 8 seconds. Mike West marked his last Sussex Schools with second place in the senior boys 200m running 23.1.

Ross Skelton was also part of the powerful Hastings middle distance presence picking up inter boys gold in the 3000m with a run of 9.28.5. Max Thomas ran a personal best to grab 800m silver in 2.01.7 with Kris Everette-Arnasson agonisingly missing out on bronze, suffering in the last 10 metres to finish in 5th place in 2.07.7. Craig Howard came away with his first county athletics medal clinching sliver in the inter boys 400m hurdles (71.3). Training partners Stacey Clusker and Grace Baker both come away with 1500m silvers, Clusker running the inter girls race in 4.50.7 and Baker missing out on gold by half a second in the junior girls event, completing the race in 4.54.1. Amy McCarthy and Lisa Normoyle joined them in the sliver club with a second place in the inter girls 300m hurdles (48.4) and discus (30.90) respectively. Keeping his impressive season going was Jamie Ellis winning the only bronze medal of the day in the junior boys 400m in 55.6.

Clusker, McCarthy, Normoyle, Baker, Skelton, Thomas and Howard have all been selected to represent Sussex Schools next weekend in Southampton following which the squad for the prestigious English Schools Championships in Sheffield in July will be selected.
